Beyond Statistics: Childhood Sexual Trauma - Written by Edmond Davis

I am writing to spark a critical conversation on the topic of childhood sexual trauma. I care very deeply about the lives I am fortunate enough to be a part of through my therapy profession. After many interactions with clients, colleagues, and individuals in my personal life, it became clear that the conversation needs amplifying.

An aspect of childhood sexual trauma that I would like to speak to is that of parents who were affected by this trauma. I believe it is essential to assist in educating parents on how their childhood sexual trauma can be related to behavioral development within the lives of their children. The children of parents who have experienced this trauma are statistically more likely to be at risk of developmental-behavioral problems. We are, after all, not statistics, and that's why I want to help develop my clients’ understanding of the effects of childhood sexual trauma on those around them. With that understanding, it allows for the space to have a power shift - their and their children's destiny is no longer being controlled by the trauma. With conversation, understanding, mental tools, and a support system, you can open your life to possibilities beyond statistics.

We look forward to continuing these types of dialogs.  Only through open communication will we gain real insight into ourselves.
