What does LMFT mean?
When looking for a therapist, the letters after the counselor’s name can be confusing and it may be difficult to discern exactly which type of therapist you are looking for. LMFT is an important part of the mental health profession, and that acronym stands for Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist.
Marital and family issues play a critical role in our overall happiness. Having an MFT help you navigate those issues can have a healthy ripple effect on all members of the family, as well as a positive impact on our roles outside of the home like work or school. Marriage and family therapists can work with any constellations in the family system, including individual clients, couples, or entire families.
MFT’s have extensive education and training which gives them the competency to work effectively with individuals and family systems. This licensure is only available to those who have successfully completed a Master’s degree in Marriage and Family Therapy, plus years of intensive supervision. We at Red Rock Counseling are proud to be a part of that academic training process by supervising Master’s level student therapists who have completed the core curriculum to see clients, as well as state-licensed MFT Interns under supervision.
